So it looks like EMI have slipped to second favourites in the race to buy Warner Music Group. I say “it looks like” as there is probably plenty of life in this race yet. A deal with EMI would probably make more sense for WMG from the perspective of rationalising resources and consolidating resources. However, one significant advantage of an independent consortium would be an improved chance of a speedy passage through regulatory body scrutiny. Even if EMI did manage to secure the deal it would only be the first lap of the race completed. Whether they like it or not, any move that EMI may make has to be considered in the wider context of the consolidation of the music industry as a whole and, more specifically, the BMG / Sony deal.
