The digital music market is a wierd ancd wonderful place: first we had OD2 seeting up a store for charity 2nd hand shop chain Oxfam and now we have Napster teaming up with UK tabloid the Sun.
The move is actually pretty smart. By way of a competition with the newspaper Napster are giving themselves mainstream exposure in an audience they would traditionally struggle to reach. Though it is interesting to see that the Sun seem to position the free downloads offer primarily as a way to create your own CD. This probably reflects that Sun readers are a relatively virgin audience for digital music services and portable digital music players…..which of course is great news for Napster as it means that most of them haven’t yet pledged their allegiences to those little white music players.
