EMI and Chinese search engine Baidu have launched an Ad-Supported music service in China. The service is streaming only at present but EMI explain that they may consider downloads.
This is the first chapter of what will be an important year for Ad-Supported music services. In fact I’d go as far as stating that this will be ‘the year of free’ for digital music.

Ad-Supported services have the potential to be a pivotal element of digital music strategies, with significant opportunity for appealing to the core audiences of file sharing networks who either unwilling or unable to pay.
The Chinese market is notorious for copyright infringement issues so maybe Ad-Supported is the only way record labels can hope t extract serious money from the digital channel in China…
