Well we didnít have to wait long for the next EU music story. As I previously blogged, the European Parliament was intending to push through a tightening up of European level legislative control of the digital music market. The Parliament had expressed their discontent with the Commissionís weaker stance. Now it transpires that the Commission has blocked the move towards adopting more stringent, binding measures. What is most interesting is the statement made to the Parliament by the EU Employment Commissioner Vladimir Spidla:
“The commission would like to say that the online sector is developing apace so we have to proceed with caution … we must not respond in an inflexible manner,”
Though one of the core focuses of this initiative was towards regional licensing, the quote nonetheless sets an interesting tone of the Commission towards the European digital music market. Apple will have been watching with interest.
