UK 7Digital’s download service went live yesterday, with the ambitious target of taking on iTunes. It will make much catalogue available in MP3 in order to help them pursue this strategy, including EMI catalogue. (Though looking through their site this morning EMI artists still seemed to be in WMA format – not very useful for attracting iPod owners).
As with iTunes the service has a tie up with Last.FM (click here for a Last.FM case study). But the key differentiator is a digital locker which provides an eMusic-style back up of all purchased music and videos – a nice feature if your computer dies…which let’s face it – they do.
