Digital music upstart Lala.com has put its nascent service in cotton wool having failed to get any other majors on board than Warner. Lala is not your run of the mill digital download service, instead letting users share streams of their digital music collections for free, and as such is a significant step away from existing major label practices. Admittedly there are plenty of grey areas in the business model, but digital music needs to experimenting with just about every alternative model it can at the moment. The iTunes model is clearly not going to replace declining CDs sales on its own, and is certainly not going to counteract the continued rise of piracy. Jupiter is putting the finishing touches on a new report on music piracy in Europe and there are some highly sobering findings. Watch this space for more details.
