BBC’s iPlayer’s Beta launch got off to a solid start last week with over 120,000 downloads and the Beeb rather modestly states that it expects 500,000 downloads in the first six months. That sounds like Jobs-ian under-promising / over-delivering to me.
Channel 4’s (also Kontiki-powered) 4OD service expects to hit the half a million mark soon. Combined with Sky’s Anytime and ITV.com’s offerings the UK is become a unprecedented testing ground for TV broadcaster online video strategies.
Jupiter has currently got a European consumer survey in the field which is asking consumers an array of questions about their interests in such offerings and others. So watch this space for some insight into whether UK broadcasters are tapping into a unique degree of consumer demand or whether other European markets should be following suit.
